Introduction to data communications. Types and sources of data. Characteristics of analogue and digital signals and channels.
General model to data communications. Analogue and digital transmission. Analysis of potential transmission problems.
Serial, parallel, one and two-way, synchronous and asynchronous transmission. Link control. Utilization, Interface standards.
Bandwidth, capacity and speed. Noise in data communications. |
Module Aims-Objectives: |
To teach students the basic issues regarding data communications. To understand the interaction between bandwidth,
capacity and speed, as well as how noise causes data loss. Familiarise students with the basic performance and use parameters
of a data link and the interface standards. |
