Signal Processing
Module Type: Telecommunications and Networks Track
Module Code: 541Τ
Syllabus: Analogue and Digital signal representation, sampling, Z transform, probabilities, random signal, convolution, auto/cross-correlation, power spectrum, DFT, FFT, coherence, statistical distributions, PDF, transfer function. FIR, IIR filters, entropy, windowing, time, frequency and spatial representation of signals. Digital signal processors, ADC/ DAC speech processing, quantisation, noise, distortion, adaptive/ predictive signal processing, image processing. 2-D signals, digitisation of 2-D signals, 2-D filters. Image enhancement, compression, optimisation, reconstruction, partitioning. Edge detection. Matlab and Simulink are extensively used for simulation purposes.
Module Aims-Objectives: To teach the principles of signal processing for telecommunication signals, presenting the main concepts and introducing the basic techniques, architectures and programming of such systems. In particular, to familiarise students with signals in time and frequency, the equivalency between real signals and number sequences (digital) and the use and applications of filters.
Upon completing this module students should be able to:
1.Assess the capacities and limitations of the various signal processing techniques.
2.Tackle commercial DSP processors with ease.
